The 90-minute desk reset
Stand, mat, cable tacos — the afternoon project that upgrades every workday after it.
A good desk is not bought, it is assembled — once, properly, in about ninety minutes. Here is the order of operations.
Minute 0–15: empty everything. Every object off the desk, every cable unplugged. You are not cleaning, you are auditing: half of what was there will not earn its way back.
Minute 15–40: the foundation. Mat first — it defines the workspace edges and decides where everything else lives. Stand second: screen top at eye level, external keyboard in front. Your neck will send a thank-you note within a week.
Minute 40–70: cables exist, route them once. Power on the left or right, never crossing. Each cable gets a taco, each taco a purpose. The dock hides behind the stand’s cable slot. This half hour is the one you will be tempted to skip; it is also the one that keeps the desk reset for months.
Minute 70–90: the return audit. Objects come back one at a time, each answering one question: does it serve the work? Coffee equipment counts. The novelty stress ball does not.
Then brew something. The first coffee at a reset desk tastes suspiciously like productivity. That is the midnight roast talking, but let it.

Did the full reset on Sunday. It is Wednesday and I still open the laptop just to look at the desk.

The 'cables exist, route them once' section paid for itself in one afternoon.
